Oxidation kinetics of high purity nickel have been studied as a function of temperature K and oxygen pressure l05 Pa using microthermogravimetric technique.

The possible influence of Archimedes effect on the results of oxidation rate measurements at different oxygen pressures was eliminated by using binary carrier Ar-He gas mixture of the composition with the density exactly the same as that of oxygen. It has been shown that in the whole temperature and oxygen pressure range studied, the coarse-grained oxide scale on nickel is growing by the outward volume diffusion of cations and electrons through doubly ionized cation vacancies and electron holes.

This conclusion is strongly supported by the excellent agreement between parabolic rate constant determined experimentally and that calculated from self-diffusion coefficient mefali nickel in single crystalline nickel oxide.
