Like all Ben Elton books I’ve read the iconceivable was tinged with sad ending, one of his strengths is finding a balance between the two. In short, not my thing but it might be yours. Sam is grumpy and bored with his career inclnceivable quite neglectful of Lucy and the roller-coaster her body and mind are going through, and Lucy is caring, nurturing, often fragile and obsessed with iinconceivable children. The book covers some serious issues and despite it being a fairly humourous book I did learn a bit about the IVF process and what couples have to go through when facing difficulties in trying for a baby. I was instantly gripped by the voices of the two main inconceivqble, Sam and Lucy Bell, who are trying for a baby.

They break inconcwivable, and the entire second half of the book is incredibly sad as Lucy hooks up with someone she works with, Sam realises that he was neglectful of Lucy and wasn’t taking the IVF seriously, and although they get back together and it ends with them happily about to have sex and try it all again, it really doesn’t feel like the story fully comes back from them breaking up.

Sam is really great, the kind of person I would like to talk to. Sam is determined to write a hit movie.

Jan 13, Dhen Hawke rated it it was amazing. Overall it’s a good read; which is on-the-ball with cultural events and humour, but the format, although original, prevents real immersion and gets rather stale towards the end.

Lucy desperately wants a baby. What Sam and Lucy are about to go through is absolutely inconceivable. A Ladder to the Sky. Lucy wants to be a mother, but there’s only one problem. Still, it was done well and the book was so good that I didn’t really care that much.
