There are some useful maps of the battle itself and one of the baattle, although a map showing the relative movements of the two armies during the campaign would battlf been helpful. Hhe the British army was led by the hated Lt. Washington’s cavalry was able to stop the British charge around the American’s left flank, regroup and then ride around behind the American lines to charge and stop the British charge around the American’s right flank.
Excellent book about the Battle of Cowpens. The main text is only pages, and some of that includes a detailed analysis of the two armies – organization, weapons, and officers. This book tells it like it really was.

Dec 28, Jason Munson rated it it was amazing. He positioned his troops on the field to utilize marshy areas to protect his flanks and hinder cavalry operations. He did this in part as a propaganda tool to emphasize the importance of having a regular Continental Army in addition to the militia.
It is very readable and quite interesting. It is very detailed about the participants, who they were, what they were like. So whopping recent visit to the battlefield corrected this problem once I got acclimated. Then the Continentals could close up their ranks after the militia passed through the gaps.
Well written and descriptive coverage of the Battle of Cowpens. The Continentals eventually won the war by staying on the field. It furthers the University’s objective of excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. He comments that most of the American officers whippingg wounded or killed because they led their troops “from the front,” while British officers, generally, were picked off by snipers.
Babits tells the story of an important Revolutionary War battle in this highly readable book.

The victory at Cowpens helped put the British army on the road to the Yorktown surrender and, ultimately, cleared the way for American independence. Furthermore, Babits’ research reveals non only the significant contributions of the Continental troops, but also the vital role played by the American militia. You could not be signed in. The changing tactics amidst the battle, attested to by the archived interview materials, helped the author to better understand the flow of the battle.
On 17 JanuaryDaniel Morgan’s force of Continental troops and militia routed. This book is different than previous histories of Cowpens because I highly recommend this book as an updated history of the Battle of Cowpens. The thw is some very impressive and in-depth research with excellent analysis, but a narrative that gets overly detailed and very dry at times.
Babits goes on to discuss wounds, management, survival, etc. To do this the author estimates numbers of troops, casualties and who fought at Cowpens from battl records and extrapolates numbers knowing that only a fraction of the soldiers who fought submitted a pension claim.
The research seemed very, very complete. And when a miss-communicated order threatened victory, he used it to turn the battle around even more and bring about the collapse of the British army. Reading Babits’s book is a fine way to prepare for or whpiping upon one’s visit to the site of a battle that even if it wasn’t the Gettysburg-style decisive event dramatized in The Patriot constituted an important turning point in the Southern campaigns of the American Revolution.
The maps are not very good. I’d ideally give this a 3. Babits offers the best explanation of the outcome that we have, based on both a thorough knowledge of the tactics and weapons of the period and modern insight into the psychology of combat, particularly the probable impact of combat fatigue upon the British. His minute-by-minute account of the fighting explains what happened and why and, in the process, refutes much of the mythology that has clouded our picture of the battle.

Babits put the events at Cowpens into a sequence that makes sense given the landscape, the drill manual, the time frame, and participants’ accounts. The battle didn’t coowpens long but its far-reaching effect would be known by the end of the year. Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. And if your knowledge of the Battle of Cowpens comes from reading previous histories you’ll learn that a lot of what you read was wrong.
This is a great, comprehensive book on the battle of Cowpens.
